PhD applicants in Mobility and Spatial Modelling (f/m) - Ref: 26-01

LISER is looking for outstanding students who are interested to develop and submit, with the help of leading academic supervisors, an application for an individual AFR PhD grant funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR).

We particularly welcome applicants who would like to develop a PhD project along the following research thematic, in collaboration between LISER and the University of Luxembourg:

The influence of hybrid and remote work arrangements on weekly mobility and activity patterns, and their temporal and spatial fragmentation, in a cross-border context?

(Supervisors: Dr. Philippe Gerber & Dr. Veronique Van Acker)

Depending on the candidate’s skills and interests, this PhD project may investigate how hybrid work influences weekly activity and mobility patterns in a cross-border context, with a focus on Luxembourg and its neighbouring regions. It will draw on rich empirical data from two different and complementary projects, WinWin4WorkLife and MMUST+, including travel diaries for each weekday and GPS observations, providing detailed information on hybrid-work profiles, household structures (e.g. couples, families with children), and cross-border commuting.

The PhD candidate will develop a multi-agent modelling framework capable of simulating seven-day activity patterns, moving beyond traditional single-day models. By combining empirical data and simulation, the project will generate new indicators of activity fragmentation and integration, supporting policy discussions on mobility, work organisation, and sustainable regional development.

Your profile

You should have:

• (or expect to achieve) a Master’s degree in economics, sociology, social policy, public health or a related social science discipline;
• Strong interest in disability, social inclusion, labour markets and/or social policy;
• Interest in working with data and empirical research; experience with quantitative and/or qualitative methods is an asset;
• Excellent verbal communication and academic writing skills in English;
• Enthusiasm for research, critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration.
